Artist Lauren Wells uses the rituals of producing and presenting food culture as conduits for community dynamics. Against this backdrop, she projects her own sense of uprootedness, displacement and transition as she follows the opportunities of her life as an artist.
For this event, Wells returns to her home town after years living abroad in Portugal, Italy, & the UK. She’ll guide participants on a tasting of iconic Cincinnati ice-creams & sorbets as she reflects on ideas of home, displacement, migration, diaspora, loss, representation, nostalgia, and membership. Wells will share personal anecdotes and discuss the cultural origins of different Cincinnati ice-cream styles––tracing heritage production techniques from French Pot to Italian-Style Gelato. Participants will be encouraged to share their own memories & associations throughout the tasting, as well as insights into personal and community significance of ice-creams & sorbets.
